Johnnie Walker Cup Final on Sunday 26th November

A record number of 88 Gold Category horses were enlisted to take part in this year’s edition of the Johnnie Walker Cup so 8 preliminary heats and not the usual 7 had to be raced from which 32 horses qualified for the three semifinals which were raced on Sunday afternoon.

This prestigious trophy, which dates back to 1939, will be raised by one of the owners of the 12 finalist horses on Sunday 26th November and this year we are celebrating its 10-year anniversary from being included back on the Malta Racing Club calendar.

Malta Equidrome’s CEO, Dr Matthew Brincat said that “The Johnnie Walker Cup has become one of the most awaited competitions by local trotting enthusiasts and the quality of racing is always an elevated one. That is why on the day of the final we are expecting a full house.”

Speaking on behalf of the Malta Racing Club, vice Chairman Tony Demanuele thanked M.Demajo Wines & Spirits Ltd for the continuous support during these past years to local horse racing and wished all the finalists a great competitive race.

Mr Alfred Braddick, Marketing Manager of M.Demajo Wines & Spirits Ltd, local importers of the Johnnie Walker brand, stated that he always looks forward to this annual event and this also goes for his company’s guests because they love to experience firsthand the passion and dedication of all those involved in horse racing. It is their pleasure to be able to be part of the thrill of such a championship.

For the press conference also present were the owners of the finalist horses in order to foresee the draws of the numbers assigned to their horses for the final.

A total of €2725 in prize money as well as trophies will be handed out to the first four finishers as well as a commemorative presentation blanket for the winning horse. The owner of the winner will also receive a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label with those finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th getting respectively a Johnnie Walker 18-year old, Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve and Johnnie Walker Green Label.
